Assigned as a signaller to the 11th Parachute Battalion, Signalman Carr was wounded in action and taken prisoner of war at Arnhem on 25/9/1944.
He was held at 12A Limburg Sep-Nov 1944 and 4B Muhlberg between 15th and 28th November 1944.
As a prisoner of war, he escaped. In his debrief questionnaire following his liberation, he said
"Escaped during March from working commando with Pvt. D. Jewers. 1st Para Bn. Recaptured by police after 3 days in woods. Escaped from camp in Tychow 30 April and made way to Russian lines near Chemnitz where learned by wireless that war was over. Companions - Pvt. L. Norton 2 Para Bn, Pvt. R. O'Dwyer 10 Para Bn. Joined by 2 Americans May 2nd while passing their camp."
After his release Bill wrote down his experiences and published them in a booklet called "My Memories of Arnhem and Beyond."
