Life Story:

6978843 Private Denis Byrne was born on 13^th February 1918.

Denis married Christina Rogers in Autumn 1941 in Dublin.

He originally joined the 2^nd Battalion of the Royal Irish Fusiliers, also serving with A Company of the 11^th Parachute Battalion and fought at the Battle of Arnhem during Operation Market Garden in September 1944.

On 20^th September 1944 he was taken prisoner of war, held at Stalag VIIIC Sagan and given POW number 92084. He was freed on 30^th April 1945.

After being discharged from the army at the end of the war, Denis was employed by Guinness Brewery, starting his employment on 23^rd March 1985.

When he was awarded his war medals on 4^th February 1949 he was living at 12. R. Block, Pearse House, Pearse Street, Dublin.

Denis died on 16^th March 1985 in Dublin.
