John Henry Howells enlisted into The Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment on the 13th February 1936 [1].
He was serving in the Middle East when he volunteered for Airborne Forces in 1943, and was posted to the 11th Parachute Battalion.
After joining the 11th, John attended Parachute Course K55 at Ramat David in Palestine, 20th July – 1st August 1943 and carried out eight parachute descents to qualify as an Army Parachutist [2].
Sometime in late 1943 or in 1944 he was posted to the 2nd Parachute Battalion, and was then assigned to the Anti-Tank Platoon. On 30th December 1945 he was discharged from further Regular Military Service [1]. He re-enlisted into the Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (T.A.) on the 22nd June 1947 [1].
