7896515 Private Lionel Cuckle

7896515 Private Lionel Cuckle was born in a Jewish family on March 2, 1914. His father was Max (Mordechai ) Cuckle and his mother Gertie (née Goldstein [Goldstone])

Lionel Cuckle Reported Prisoner of War Lionel enlisted on 1st September 1939. He attended parachute course No. 47 at Ramat David in Palestine from 10 to 22June 1943. After he received his parachute qualification wings he was assigned to Support Company, 11th Parachute Battalion.

On 11th May 1944 Lionel married Florence Lipohis Lifchitz in Hull, Yorkshire. At Arnhem on 26th September 1944 Lionel was taken prisoner of war together with two Jewish colleagues, Cyril Bernstein (11 Bn) and Sydney Goldstein (KOSB). His capture was reported in The Hull Daily Main on 27th November 1944.



From 2nd October 1944 until 2nd November 1944 he was held at Stalag XIIA Limberg and from 2nd November 1944 until 6th May 1945 at IVB Muhlburg. He was allocated prisoner of war number 025995.

Lionel died on 11th October 1994 in Hull and was buried in Marfleet Lane Jewish Cemetery.
