167754 Lieutenant Frank Crawford

167754 Captain Frank Crawford was born on December 3, 1912, as the son of Frank and Eleanor Crawford. Husband of Morva Dorothy Crawford, of Letcombe Regis, Berkshire.

On January 13, 1941, he was commissioned in The King's Regiment.

Frank successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway, on course No. 51 from 15 to 27 February 1943. His course report stated he “Has set a very good example, an excellent performer and leader”.

He was posted as officer commanding of the Assault Platoon, Support Company, 11th Parachute Battalion.

On August 28, 1943, he was promoted to temporary Captain, meaning that he held his substantive rank of Lieutenant but was appointed to the higher rank of Captain to fill a specific role or vacancy.

He flew to Arnhem along with the other officers and men of the 11th Battalion and, after six days of heavy fighting Frank was killed in action on Saturday September 22, 1944, at the age of 32 and was first buried near the Van Hofwegen Laundry at the Ploegseweg, to the northeast of Oosterbeek Church.

Frank was re-interred to the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on October 23, 1945, grave 27.B.3.
