6287082 Corporal Jeffrey Byford was born on January 2, 1922 in Rochford, Essex to Archibald Alfred Byford and
Elizabeth Millar
(née Tew). He had a total of five siblings. At the time of Jeffery's birth, Archibald had returned to his
civilian occupation in the Building Trade.
However, when Archibald and Elizabeth had married on March 14th 1919, he was a 22 year old soldier and
she
was a 22 year old widow.
Archibald had enlisted in 5 Dragoon Guards on 21st February 1916 and transfered to The York and Lancaster
Regiment, serving from 23rd February 1917 to 12th October 1919.
Prior to becoming a member of the Parachute Regiment, Jeffrey initially joined the Royal West Kent Regiment and,
from there, volunteered for the airborne forces and was
posted to B Company, 11th Bn The Parachute Regiment. He attended and successfully completed his parachute course at
Royal Air Force Kabrit on course No. 55 from 20 July until 01
August 1943.
In 1944, before going to Arnhem, Jeffrey married Peggy E Yarnton in Rochford, Essex.
During the Battle of Arnhem he was wounded in action and taken prisoner of war. He was held at Stalag XIIA Limburg
and given prisoner of war
number 90216.
Jeff Arrived back in the United Kingdom on May 17, 1945 to be reunited with Peggy and begin married life
together.
When he was awarded his war medals on 1st July 1949, Jeffrey was living at 102, High Street, Raleigh,
Essex.
He and Peggy remained in the Rayleigh area and between 2002 and 2007 were living together at 4, Sir Walter Raleigh
Drive, Rayleigh, Essex
On 12th Feb 2007, he died, aged 85, and was granted probate on 15 May 2007 in
the Ipswich probate registry, number
