6468016 Private Ebenezer Cochran MM was born 13th December 1916 in Gateshead, Durham to parents Ebenezer Cochran (bn 1899)
and Isabella Spiller O'Brien who married in early 1917 in Gateshead, Durham.
Ebenezer experienced tragedy at an early age. On the morning of Wednesday 12th June 1925, he woke up and went dowstairs to find his
father dead in the kitchen.
Ebenezer married Margaret Amelia TIHERADGE (bn 22 August 1919, baptised 14 September 1914 died 2006) in 1938.
They are listed in 1939 living at 77 Offord Road, Islington with their son Robert.
He served with 9th Battalion Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) (Edgware)
and was awarded a Military Medal (MM).
His MM was announced in the London Gazette on August 19, 1943
for actions on May 1, 1943.
Just one week after being awarded the MM, Ebenezer volunteered for Airborne Forces and undertook parachute course No. 57 at Kabrit
from 01 until 11 August 1943.
After
successfully completing his parachute course, he was assigned to the 11th Parachute Battalion. He jumped on the
second lift of Operation Market Garden on 18 September 1944 and was killed in action on 23 September.
Ebenezer has
no known grave and is commemorated on panel 9 of the Groesbeek Memorial to the Missing, Groesbeek Canadian War
Cemetery.
During an investiture at Buckingham Palace in London, following the Battle of Arnhem, eight-year-old son
Bobby received the bravery award for his father from King George VI.
