1101964 Corporal Albert Henry Carter was born on 29^th June 1920 in Dover, Kent; son of Henry Albert Carter and Eliza Agnes (widow Bourne) (née Kenney).

In 1921 the family was living at 14 River Street, Dover. At this time Albert was the only child of both Henry and Eliza; his 3 elder half-siblings shared the same mother as Albert but their own biological father - Eliza's first husband - had died fighting in France and Flanders in 1917.

By the time of the 1939 Register of England and Wales, Albert had left school and was working as a bricklayer's labourer; his father was also employed as a bricklayer.

Albert served with the 11^th Parachute Battalion and shortly before being deployed to fight at the Battle of Arnhem during Operation Market Garden in September 1944, he married Violet Coxon in Sunderland, Durham.

During the fighting in and around Arnhem and Oosterbeek, 25^th September 1944 Albert was taken prisoner and removed to Stalag XIIA Limburg where he was given POW No. 92128. Albert was finally freed on 19^th April 1945 and returned the the UK.

Albert died in 1984 in Tavistock, Devon
