4746018 Sergeant Bernard William Bartholomew

4746018 Sergeant Bernard William Bartholomew was the son of Bernard and Doris Elizebeth (née Bradshaw) Bartholomew, born 6th December 1915. In 1921 he was living with his parents and younger sister, Doreen, at 21 Chapel Street, Greasborough, East Riding of Yorkshire.

In 1935 he married Edna Clark, of Brinsworth, Rotherham, Yorkshire.

Bernard successfully completed his parachute training at Ramat David in Palestine on course number 69. The course lasted from 28 August until 05 October 1943 and after receiving his parachute qualification wing he was posted as acting Company Sergeant Major to Headquarters Company of 11th Parachute Battalion.

Bernard took part in the Operation Market Garden, specifically in the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944.

He was killed in action at the age of 28 on Tuesday September 19th 1944, and temporarily buried in ‘Onder de Bomen’ General Cemetery in Renkum.

Bernard’s remains were reburied on August 24th 1945, in the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, grave 5.A.20.

On 2nd November 1949, after her application for his war medals, they were sent to Bernard's wife Edna at her home in Rotherham, Yorkshire.
