88545 Lieutenant Peter Hyde Forshall

88545 Captain Peter Hyde Forshall was born on August 5th 1905, in Tentworth, Iping Lane, Midhurst, West Sussex. His parents were Francis Scrimgeour Hyde Forshall and Isabella Forshall (née Scrimgeour). On 22nd October 1905 Peter was baptised in the parish church of Stedham, West Sussex. His father's occupation is listed as Gentleman, meaning he was a wealthy man of independent means. His actual occupation was Stockbroker in the City of London.

In the 1911 census he is living at the family home of Tentworth. At the time of the census there were 13 people living in the property, comprising a mixture of family members, visitors and domestic staff.

At the time of the 1921 census Peter was a 15 year old full-time boarder at Shrewsbury School. He was a late Cadet at Shrewsbury School Contingent, Junior Division, Officer Training Corps. On June 17, 1939 Peter was commissioned into the Royal Armoured Corps - Territorial Army (3rd County of London Yeomanry).

On July 12, 1940, he was posted to MI 5 (Military Intelligence, section 5) and on April 10, 1943 he transferred to the Parachute Regiment. On 4th May 1943, he was confirmed in the rank of Substantive War Lieutenant.

He successfully completed parachute course No. 45 at Ramat David, Palestine, from 01 to 12 June 1943, at the age of 37.

After receiving his parachute qualification wings he became the Adjutant of the Battalion. In July 1944 Peter became the second-in-command of Support Company.

On Monday, September 18, 1944, Peter and his stick received the red light signal, and he stood ready in the doorway to jump. His Batman, Private Bill Larder, saw to his horror that Peter jumped too early. The red light was still on.

Reported missing on 25th September 1945, Peter fell into German hands and was taken prisoner of war. He was sent to Oflag XII-B in Hadamar, Germany and was given Prisoner of War number 90954. He was formally recorded as having been liberated on 2nd June 1945.

Following the war, Peter returned to the family firm of stockbrokers, working in the city of London. On 29th May 1952 he married Diana Bremner in Westminster, Middlesex, London.

Peter died on June 20th 1980 in Iping, Midhurst, West Sussex. At the time of his death, he is listed in The Gazette as being a Stockbroker (retired) of Stubbs Farm, Midhurst, West Sussex GU29 0PG. He is buried in a family grave in St James Churchyard, Stedham, Chichester, West Sussex.
