‘John’ Latz was 24 years old and serving in the Middle East as a member of the Pioneer Corps (Army No: 13808938), when he volunteered for Airborne Forces. He was sent to the newly formed up 11th Parachute Battalion and did parachute course 69, AT R.A.F. Ramat David, 28th September to the 5th October 1943.
His ‘new’ Army number was from the batch given to members of The Royal West Kent Regiment.
He jumped at Arnhem and was taken POW and sent to Stalag XIB, at Falingbostel in Germany.
John Latz later served as a Sergeant in the 3rd Parachute Battalion. Latz also served in Mike Hoare's 5 Commando in Katanga and the Congo (1963-65) rising to the rank of Lieutenant as a public relations / communications officer, later filing press clippings from the war torn country.
