6978843 Private Denis Byrne was born on 13th February 1918.
Denis married Christina Rogers in Autumn 1941 in Dublin.
He originally joined the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Irish Fusiliers, also serving with
A Company of the 11th Parachute Battalion and
fought at the Battle of Arnhem during Operation Market Garden in September 1944.
On 20th September
1944 he was taken prisoner of war, held at Stalag VIIIC Sagan and given POW number 92084.
He was freed on 30th April 1945.
After being discharged from the army at the end of the war, Denis was employed by Guinness Brewery, starting his employment
on 23rd March 1985.
When he was awarded his war medals on 4th February 1949 he was living at 12. R. Block,
Pearse House, Pearse Street, Dublin.
Denis died on 16th March 1985 in Dublin.
