Life Story: 3447850 Corporal Fredrick Atkinson was born on the 1st of April 1917.
His Army career started in June of 1938, his civilian trade or profession was noted as a driver. Fredrick is not shown on the Middle East Parachute Courses so we can presume he was trained in England before joining the 11th Parachute Battalion. According to the documents he was a Signaller so he might have been posted to HQ Company of the battalion.
Fredrick landed with the 11th Parachute Battalion on the afternoon of Monday the 18th on drop zone ‘Y’ , just east of the Dutch town of Ede.
Fredrick got wounded on Tuesday September 19, 1944, and had a shrapnel wound(s) and a fractured left leg while taken prisoner.
He was taken to Stalag 11B near Fallingbostel, Germany, where he arrived on 27 September.
