555346 Corporal John Robert Rosier Atkinson

555346 Corporal John Robert Rosier Atkinson was born on 31st March 1914 in Liverpool (West Darby); the son of William Holliwell Atkinson and Ellen (Nellie) Atkinson (née Rosier). On 3rd June 1914 he was baptised at St Barnabus, Mossley Hill, Liverpool. At the time of his birth, the family was living at 1 Wyndcote Road and his father's occupation was Master Mariner.

In 1936 he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and during World War 2 was attached to Headquarters Company of the 11th Parachute Battalion.

In September 1944 with the other men of the 11th Battalion John was deployed on Operation Market Garden. During the fighting in the Arnhem area, on 21st September 1944 he was taken prisoner of war. He was taken to Stalag XIB Fallingbostel and given POW Number 118650.

On 20th April 1945 he was freed from captivity and returned to England.

In early 1951 John married Gladys Winifred Chester in Liverpool. The couple remained in the Liverpool area until John's death on 11th July 1978.
